The Implications of a Rigidly Determined Existence

Are You Bothered by the Thought of a Rigidly Determined Existence?

The idea of a rigidly determined existence, where every action is preordained, can be disturbing for some. It questions the principles of determinism, where human free will and the option to make decisions are incorrect conceptions. In this view, our behavior and even our thinking are determined by events and conditions that occurred before and over which we had no control. This determined mindset is often disempowering, erasing any sense of agency or hope for change. According to Vaughn (2021), existentialists such as Sartre believed that humans are inherently free and are solely to blame for what they make of themselves. Yet, determinism has an argument which claims that we are but reactions to a series of antecedent causes. To the learned persons who prefer to be their masters, knowing that other forces predetermine one's fate is always uncomfortable (Vaughn, 2021).
Still, determinism can also help to find certain consolation. It provides a forgive of predictability, asserting that occurrences occur in a most rational order and obey a natural law (Vaughn, 2021). This point of view makes it easier to handle uncertainty because it suggests that everything in life has a cause, even a failure and troubles. To reconcile this tension, Vaughn (2021) notes several philosophical stances looking for the middle ground between determinism and free will, including Compatibilism, which claims that determinism and free will can exist simultaneously. In conclusion, one can say that the degree to which determinism is either bothersome or comforting is entirely a question of one's prejudice.
