Sartre's existential Freedom

Jean-Paul Sartre once said that existence precedes essence, which is central to existentialist thinking as people are born without preordained innate purposes. Existentialism does not deny the reality of the forces that shape our character and environment but insists that we are responsible for who we are and what we do and that although we make ourselves, we are also free to choose the world we live in at any given time. Some people may dispute existentialism, particularly about Sartre’s excessive freedom of a human, so to speak, that a human has unlimited ability to create himself. However, Sartre is not suggesting that one can become anything they like, which is why this famous quote is incomplete on its own; people have to bear the full responsibility for what they turn into in difference of the pressures of culture or genetics they experience (Vaughn, 2021).

Whereas Sartre would appear lofty in this respect, certain critics suggest that Sartre overlooks how much free reign these factors above have over persons. These real-life issues can reduce the number of options one gets to make, giving the impression that Sartre was so far off base. However, Sartre also argues that people are free to decide how they should act toward situations given to them, thereby retrospectively changing the nature of their existence. In this regard, it can be noted that Sartre is not overemphasizing; instead, he is pointing out another level of commitment to human action (Vaughn, 2021).
